Nigeria has confirmed its first Ebola case, identifying the Bundibugyo strain, the same variant driving a major outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) announced that the patient, a female diplomat who travelled from Uganda to Abuja on October 3, tested positive after three rounds of molecular testing.
Officials revealed that her condition has deteriorated into multi-organ failure. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also verified the Bundibugyo strain, noting that there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment available.
Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya warned that the situation poses “an extremely serious threat,” as neighbouring Kenya has reported nine cases.
Nigeria has identified 44 contacts linked to the patient and is intensifying efforts to trace others who may have been exposed. Infection prevention measures are being strengthened at the private hospital where she sought care.
The DRC’s ongoing Ebola epidemic has become the deadliest in its history, with more than 4,000 deaths recorded from over 9,000 confirmed cases.
Nigerian health authorities, in collaboration with WHO, are ramping up surveillance and response to prevent further spread.
