The Borno State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed Mohammed Bunu, one of its candidates for the State House of Assembly, over allegations that he campaigned for African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.
In a letter dated October 25, 2026, and signed by NDC state deputy chairman Umar Fema, the party stated that Bunu’s conduct was inconsistent with its constitution, rules, regulations, and principles of discipline.
The letter cited campaign materials featuring the ADC logo, the slogan “SABON TAFIYA, SABON SALO,” and photographs and names of both Atiku Abubakar and Bunu.
Party leaders said the materials raised serious concerns about Bunu’s political loyalty and commitment to the NDC.According to the party, the issue began at the Hausari Ward level.
The ward executive invited Bunu to appear on October 23, 2026, to respond to the allegations, but he did not attend. Ward secretary Rabiu Umar then recommended disciplinary action and referred the matter to the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) party leadership.
Bunu was invited a second time on October 24 to appear before an investigation committee but again failed to attend, the letter said. After reviewing the committee’s report, MMC party chairman Adamu Ibrahim endorsed the recommendation for dismissal and forwarded it to the state leadership.
Fema stated that, based on the allegations and reports from the party’s disciplinary structure, the NDC had decided to dismiss Bunu from the party, subject to constitutional requirements.
He was directed to stop presenting himself as an authorised representative of the NDC in any capacity affected by the decision.
The letter noted that the action on his party membership was separate from any formal steps that might affect his status as a candidate.
