Electric Fence Around Tinubu, Bago Billboard Sparks Reactions

A viral video showing coils of protective wire, described by many online as an electric fence wrapped around the support pole of a large campaign billboard featuring President Bola Tinubu and Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has triggered widespread reactions on social media.

In the footage circulating on X, a man filming the structure reacts with shock, exclaiming “Innalillahi” as he focuses on the wire surrounding the pole.

Viewers interpreted the installation as a measure to stop people from climbing and damaging the billboard.

The video has drawn mixed comments. Some users criticised the move as evidence of public rejection of the administration, arguing that politicians should earn acceptance through performance rather than fortifying campaign materials.

Others highlighted the contrast with ongoing insecurity, questioning why billboards receive such protection while basic services and citizen safety lag. One commenter called it an irony for Niger State.

Supporters of the protection countered that vandalism of political campaign materials is unacceptable regardless of political differences and that safeguarding public displays is legitimate.

Some suggested the wire alone might not fully prevent damage, proposing alternative methods like cutting power or using projectiles.

The incident follows earlier reports of security personnel being deployed to guard Tinubu campaign billboards in Kaduna State amid concerns over possible vandalism ahead of campaign activities.

Former National Human Rights Commission chairman Professor Chidi Odinkalu has previously criticised the prioritisation of billboard protection over the safety of ordinary Nigerians.

while social media users widely referred to the installation as an “electric fence,” available footage confirms only the presence of coiled wire around the pole and does not independently verify whether it is electrified.

Man left in shock after seeing electric fence wire installed on a pole supporting a large billboard bearing President Tinubu and Niger State Governor’s banner, apparently to prevent people from destroying it. https://t.co/irjN4T79o4
