The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of offering money, political appointments and other incentives to lure its candidates into defecting to the ruling party.
A statement on Tuesday by Osa Director, national publicity
secretary of the NDC, said the party was aware of what it described as the
APC’s attempts to induce its candidates to defect.
“The NDC is fully aware of the desperate and malicious
tactics of the APC, which has resorted to offering money, political
appointments, and other material incentives to induce some money-minded
candidates of our party to jump ship and defect to its sinking fold,” the
statement reads.
The NDC said it was not bothered by the defections,
describing the candidates who had left the party as lacking its values and
ideological commitment.
“For those who have fallen for this bait, it is clear that
they lack the values, virtues, and ideological commitment associated with our
great party. They were never truly of us,” the statement said.
“To them, we say good riddance to bad rubbish, and we wish
them luck in their political misadventures.”
Director said the party would conduct fresh congresses to
elect replacement candidates in the affected constituencies, citing the
provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026.
He urged party members and supporters not to be unsettled by
the defections, alleging that the APC was attempting to weaken the NDC by
inducing some of its members to leave.
“These are the last kicks of a dying horse that has seen the
handwriting on the wall of its imminent defeat,” Director said.
He said the NDC remained committed to providing Nigerians
with good governance, security and prosperity.
Although the NDC spokesperson did not mention names of
recent defectors from the party, the party’s statement comes nearly 24 hours
after Ibrahim Kashim, the NDC governorship candidate in Bauchi, announced his
resignation from the party.
In a letter addressed to the NDC chairman in Bauchi LGA,
dated 16 October 2026, Kashim said his resignation follows a “careful
reflection, but does not in any way diminish his commitment to the political
struggle for a better Bauchi state”.
Although Kashim did not disclose his next move, reports
indicate he might likely join the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the coming
weeks.
Meanwhile on August 3, Rufai Hanga, senator representing
Kano central and NDC’s only senator from the north, also resigned from the
party and formally joined the APC on September 6.
Hanga, who currently serves as deputy minority whip of the
senate, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the party chairman
of Najeria ward in Nassarawa LGA of Kano state.
Also, a few days ago, some house of representatives and
state houses of assembly candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC)
and NDC in Taraba, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano and Plateau reportedly defected to the
APC.
