Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has described the death of 32 Nigerian Air Force personnel in Monday’s aircraft crash in Ondo State as “a profound tragedy.”
The ATR-42 aircraft, carrying 25 officers and seven crew members, went down near a naval base in Igbokoda while on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos.
In a statement, Matawalle expressed condolences to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of those on board.
“I received with profound sadness the news of the crash… It is a painful reminder of the sacrifices routinely made by members of our Armed Forces in the service of the nation,” he said.
He added that the Ministry of Defence stood with President Bola Tinubu in mourning the fallen personnel, honouring their courage and dedication.
“Their commitment to duty and service to Nigeria will not be forgotten,” Matawalle affirmed.The tragedy has drawn national grief, with calls for a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.
