The Kwankwasiyya Movement has accused a staff member of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of colluding with unauthorised individuals to substitute some of its candidates in Kano State.
Hundreds of supporters staged a protest at INEC’s Kano office on Friday, submitting a petition demanding an investigation into alleged irregularities and the omission of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo from the commission’s list.
Movement spokesperson, Dr. Habib Mohammed, alleged that forged letters with suspicious signatures were submitted to INEC headquarters, leading to the substitution of candidates.
He insisted that only duly authorised party officials should communicate with INEC on nominations.
“We believe an INEC staff member colluded with unauthorised people to conceal a decision that led to the substitution of some of our candidates,” Mohammed said, adding that the group had formally petitioned the commission.
Deputy governorship candidate Mustapha Kwankwaso, who led the protest, described the omission of Gwarzo’s name as unjust and urged INEC to rectify the matter.
Responding, Kano Resident Electoral Commissioner Abdu Zango assured protesters that their petition would be forwarded to INEC’s national headquarters.
He explained that the commission had already provided reasons for the omission and opened a window for appeal until October 24.
Zango commended the protesters for conducting themselves peacefully, stressing that the Kano office remained neutral and would give the petition due attention.
