The Kogi State Police Command has opened an investigation into the deaths of two officers attached to the Ajaokuta Division, Amos Yusuf and Grace Onimisi.
According to reports, Yusuf allegedly shot his female colleague, Onimisi, during night duty before turning the weapon on himself. Both were rushed to separate hospitals, where they were confirmed dead.
Police spokesperson, Saliu Oyiza Afusat, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, noting that an AK-47 rifle and four expended cartridges were recovered at the scene.
She added that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further inquiry.
While speculation suggests the officers may have been romantically involved and had a disagreement, the command cautioned against drawing conclusions.
“The circumstances and motive remain subjects of investigation, and the Command will not speculate on matters yet to be established,” Afusat said.
The remains of both officers have been deposited at ASCO Hospital mortuary as investigations continue.
