Ijebu Gas Odour Under Control - Ogun Govt Assures Residents

The Ogun State Government has moved to calm fears following reports of a strong gaseous odour in parts of the Ijebu axis, assuring residents that the situation is under control.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, gave the assurance on Wednesday after several secondary school students in Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Igbo and Ago-Iwoye were hospitalised.

Government officials who visited the General Hospital confirmed that more than 30 students had been treated for symptoms such as shortness of breath, stomach disorders and drowsiness.

While some required oxygen, most received less intensive care, and many were discharged before the assessment team left.

The odour was reported beyond school premises, with residents in neighbouring communities also affected.

A team from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) joined state officials to investigate the incident.

This latest episode has reignited concerns over recurring odour incidents in Ijebu-Ode since April 2026.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, previously attributed the emissions to natural geological activity linked to underground gas and tectonic fault lines, ruling out sabotage or pipeline leaks.

Authorities have promised further investigation to determine the precise source of the odour, while urging residents to remain calm as monitoring continues.
