Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has emphasized the urgent need for African nations to develop indigenous defence technologies and strengthen local manufacturing capacity to reduce reliance on foreign military equipment.
Speaking during his official visit to the Rwanda Engineering and Manufacturing Corporation (REMCO) in Kigali on October 21, 2026, Shaibu highlighted the strategic importance of homegrown innovation in building resilient and sustainable defence systems.
According to a statement by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the COAS was received by REMCO’s Chief Executive Officer, Emile Rungambajye, and toured the corporation’s engineering and manufacturing facilities.
He underscored the role of African innovation, research, and industrial partnerships in tackling contemporary security challenges.
Established in 2018, REMCO specializes in precision engineering, machining, metal casting, fabrication, and the production of machinery and spare parts.
Its expanding capabilities, Shaibu noted, demonstrate Africa’s potential to build critical technologies and reduce dependence on foreign supply chains.
The visit also reinforced Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its own defence-industrial base through institutions such as the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).
Shaibu stressed that local manufacturing is vital to sustaining military operations, improving equipment availability, enhancing maintenance, and driving technological advancement.
