Hunger in Nigeria now National Emergency -Peter Obi

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has raised alarm over the worsening hunger crisis in the country, describing it as a “national emergency.”

In a statement posted on his verified X account to mark World Food Day, Obi lamented that millions of Nigerian families are trapped in a cycle of hunger, poverty, and insecurity.

He noted that Nigeria’s global hunger ranking has dropped from 109th out of 125 countries in 2023 to 117th in 2026, underscoring the severity of the situation under the current administration.

The former Anambra State governor expressed concern that despite Nigeria’s vast fertile land, about 60 percent remains uncultivated.

He warned that these unused lands have become hideouts for terrorist groups and criminal networks, further worsening insecurity.

“What became clear to me is that hunger in the country must be declared a national emergency,” Obi wrote.

“Nigerians deserve a country where no family goes to bed hungry, farmers can work without fear, and poverty and insecurity are confronted with urgency and compassion.”

He pledged that under his leadership, farmers would be supported with targeted grants, subsidies, and security measures to restore food production. Obi concluded with a call for collective action:

“Together, we can build a Nigeria where no one goes to bed hungry and every farmer can work in peace and dignity. A New Nigeria is possible.”
