The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed how his Rainbow Coalition played a decisive role in ensuring Monday Okpebholo’s emergence as governor of Edo State in the 2024 election.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting of the coalition in Abuja, Wike said his political alliance helped the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flagbearer, Dr. Asue Ighodalo.
The former Rivers State governor explained that his opposition to then-outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki’s succession plan was central to his strategy.
According to Wike, he rejected Ighodalo’s candidacy despite acknowledging his credentials, because he viewed the bid as an extension of Obaseki’s influence.
“I said I would not allow Obaseki to produce a successor, even though the candidate was a very good candidate… Returning him would be like bringing Obaseki back, so I am sorry, you have to fail. And he failed,” Wike stated.
His remarks shed light on the behind-the-scenes maneuvers that shaped the Edo governorship race, underscoring the influence of coalition politics in Nigeria’s electoral outcomes.
