Gov Uba Sani Pardons 27 Inmates to Mark 66th Independence Anniversary

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has granted clemency to 27 inmates serving various sentences in correctional centres across the state as part of events commemorating Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.

The latest exercise raises the total number of inmates who have benefited from the governor’s prerogative of mercy to more than 500 since he took office in 2023.

Commissioner for Information and Culture Ahmed Maiyaki made the disclosure in a statement issued on Friday.

He noted that the intervention involved the release of eligible inmates as well as the payment of fines and compensation, which has exceeded N300 million for victims since 2023.

Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice James Kanyip said the move continues the governor’s practice of extending mercy to deserving inmates on major national occasions.

Similar exercises have been carried out during New Year celebrations, Democracy Day, and previous Independence Day events.Kanyip explained that the prerogative of mercy is applied through established processes that consider accountability, rehabilitation, and the responsibilities that come with freedom.

“The beneficiaries are expected to return to society with a renewed sense of responsibility and appreciation of their obligations to others,” the Attorney-General said.

He added that the government’s efforts go beyond simply releasing inmates by also addressing financial obstacles that can prevent deserving prisoners from regaining their freedom.

The payment of fines and compensation introduces a restorative justice element that recognises the interests of victims while helping eligible individuals reintegrate into society.

“Public safety, human dignity, rehabilitation and the possibility of redemption should form part of the administration of justice,” Kanyip stated.

He said the clemency would allow the beneficiaries to reconnect with their families and communities and begin rebuilding their lives.

The state government, he added, remains committed to supporting rehabilitation, reconciliation, and the reintegration of deserving inmates.

The administration reiterated its dedication to a justice system that protects society, respects victims’ interests, and offers deserving individuals a chance to become responsible and productive members of their communities.
