A Magistrate’s Court in Enugu East has ordered the remand of 45-year-old Ani Chidi for allegedly recording and circulating video footage of an attack on members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) during a political meeting in Obuoffia Awkunanaw.
Chidi was arraigned by the Enugu State Police Command on Monday on three counts of cybercrime and criminal defamation under Section 24(2)(a)&(c)(i) of the Cybercrime Act, 2015 (as amended in 2024).
According to the charge sheet, the defendant was accused of publishing video evidence of the September 12, 2026 attack across social media platforms and online outlets, while allegedly making false claims that three individuals were part of the armed group that disrupted the meeting.
Following the arraignment, Chief Magistrate F. E. Chukwu ordered Chidi’s remand in prison custody.
The NDC, however, condemned the prosecution, accusing the police of targeting a witness who captured evidence of the violence while releasing suspected perpetrators of the gun attack.
In a statement signed by Sampson Ukwu, media aide to the party’s governorship candidate, Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, the NDC described the development as “a malicious abuse of judicial process” and urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a fair and independent investigation.
The party further alleged that state authorities were attempting to silence crucial witnesses, warning Governor Peter Mbah’s administration to “stop suffocating the people” and allow justice to prevail.
