Edo to partner Botswana on Agric, Livestock Development

The Edo State Government is seeking partnership with Botswana to boost agriculture and livestock development, as part of its drive to attract foreign investment ahead of the planned International Agricultural and Livestock Investment Summit.

A state delegation met Botswana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Philada Kereng, at the High Commission in Abuja on Friday.

The team was led by Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security Dr Jerry Uwangue and Commissioner for Livestock Development Ohimai Ehijimetor.

Kereng praised Edo’s work on livestock production and encouraged the state to look into agro-tourism and animal feed manufacturing as promising investment areas.

She also promised the High Commission’s help in drawing investors to the upcoming summit, opening a possible path for cooperation between Edo and Botswana.

In a joint statement released on Sunday, the two commissioners said the meeting was one of several ongoing talks with diplomatic missions aimed at securing international participation and investment for the summit.

The event is expected to give investors a chance to examine opportunities in agriculture, livestock production, animal feed manufacturing and related businesses in the state.

The High Commissioner’s suggestions on agro-tourism and feed production point to ways Edo can expand beyond traditional farming and animal rearing.

Quality, affordable feed can raise productivity and cut costs for farmers, while agro-tourism can create extra income by linking farming activities with tourism and supporting rural businesses.

Other members of the Edo team included Special Adviser on Livestock Development Roland Igbadumhe, Senior Special Assistant on Agriculture and Food Security Emmanuel Sule, and Director in the Ministry of Livestock Development Lucky Adebudo.

The engagement with the Botswana High Commission forms part of the state government’s wider effort to build international partnerships that can bring capital, technical know-how and commercial interest into its agricultural and livestock sectors.
