Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has criticized the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas of failing to hold President Bola Tinubu accountable.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Melaye alleged that the legislature has surrendered its independence, describing it as a “department of the Villa.”
He argued that the Assembly’s handling of constitutional amendments, electoral reforms, budget implementation, and security matters raises serious concerns about its role as a check on executive power.
In a paper titled “The 10th Assembly: The Pathway to Tinubu’s ‘Lifetime Presidency’”, Melaye warned that excessive presidential power does not require abolishing term limits, but rather emerges when institutions meant to restrain the president fail to act.
He stressed that Nigeria’s constitution establishes a democracy divided among the executive, legislature, and judiciary, not “an elected monarchy.”
While acknowledging that the Assembly has passed bills and conducted hearings, Melaye questioned whether it has shown true independence when presidential authority needed to be checked.
He cited examples including the March 2025 state of emergency in Rivers State, controversies over the 2025 tax laws, disputes surrounding the Electoral Act 2026, delayed budget implementation, and the handling of constitutional amendments.
