Delta Assembly Approves State Police Bill

The Delta State House of Assembly on Tuesday approved the proposed Sixth Alteration to the 1999 Constitution, clearing the way for the establishment of state police in Nigeria.

All 23 members present voted in favour, with none opposing or abstaining.

The debate took place during plenary, led by the House Leader and presided over by Speaker Emomotimi Guwor.

After the vote, Guwor praised the lawmakers, describing the decision as an important step toward creating a policing system better suited to local security challenges.

He said the reform could improve intelligence gathering and strengthen efforts to protect lives and property.

“For Delta State, this reform holds great promise for protecting lives and property, sustaining peace and creating a safer environment for investment and development,” the Speaker said.

Guwor noted that the move aligns with the state government’s MORE Agenda under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

He directed the Clerk of the House to formally communicate the Assembly’s approval to the National Assembly.

The approval is part of the constitutional amendment process required to establish state police. Further action at the national level is still needed before the reform can take effect.
