Dr. Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, has argued that President Bola Tinubu’s campaign presence is weak compared to that of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Peter Obi and even African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking on Arise News, Amadi noted that second-term presidents traditionally hit the campaign trail to make their case to voters, but Tinubu has largely avoided travelling across states, including those affected by crises.
He suggested that this limited visibility undermines the ruling party’s campaign strength.
“There is no doubt about this president’s age and frailty; we’ve seen that happen before. Even in governance, he has not travelled across the country,” Amadi said, adding that Tinubu’s reliance on proxies such as governors may be a tactical move but creates poor optics for voters.
Amadi stressed that while Tinubu’s reduced presence could be compensated by participating in debates and directly addressing citizens, the opposition could exploit his absence from the campaign trail.
He warned that Nigerians, already grappling with economic hardship highlighted by recent World Bank reports, may demand more direct engagement from the president.
He concluded that each party must craft strategies to minimize weaknesses, but Tinubu’s approach risks being perceived as disengaged at a critical time.
