Armed men suspected to be bandits have allegedly kidnapped several travellers along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers intercepted two commercial buses near the Umunoha axis of the road on Thursday morning.
The exact number of abducted passengers remains unclear at the time of reporting.A source said the bandits exploited slow-moving traffic caused by cattle crossing the expressway.
“Many people were kidnapped. They usually launch attacks when their cattle are crossing the road because they know vehicles will slow down,” the source explained.
The incident adds to a series of recent kidnappings along the route, with victims reportedly released after ransom payments. One case involved a man and his daughter, allegedly freed after ₦29 million was paid three weeks ago.
Police spokesperson DSP Henry Okoye had yet to respond to enquiries regarding the latest incident.
