APC, Sowore Clash Over Aso Villa Campaign Inauguration Request

A war of words has erupted between the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, following the AAC’s request to inaugurate its campaign council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

In a letter dated October 21, 2026, AAC sought approval to hold the event on November 11, 2026, and requested logistical support including food and drinks.

Reacting on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Basiru dismissed the request, describing Sowore as a “skit maker” and “comedian,” and questioned his political relevance.

Basiru argued that Sowore should first prove his strength at the grassroots level, noting that his party performed poorly in the 2023 elections.

“Even rejected ballot papers had more votes than his party,” Basiru said.Sowore responded via his X handle, recalling his shared activism history with Basiru in the 1990s.

He posted a 1998 photograph of them together during student union struggles against military dictatorship, insisting that the fight for democracy and justice should not be trivialized.

“The struggle for justice, democracy, freedom and the preservation of human dignity is neither skit-making nor comedy,” Sowore wrote, accusing Basiru of abandoning the principles they once defended.

He warned that political appointments are temporary and vowed to continue his activism beyond the current administration.
