The Anglican Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Geoffrey Ibeabuchi, has cautioned political leaders from the South East to stop attacking Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Speaking at the Diocesan Men’s Conference in Ude Ofeme, Umuahia, on Saturday, Bishop Ibeabuchi warned that hostility toward Obi and divisions among Igbo leaders could weaken the region’s political influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
He questioned what he described as a “consistent pattern of hostility” from some South East leaders, asking what they hoped to achieve by publicly criticizing Obi or seeking information to implicate him.
The cleric noted that similar levels of public attacks were not observed among Yoruba or Hausa-Fulani leaders against their prominent political figures.
The bishop also criticized Igbo leaders for their role in the proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), contrasting it with what he described as the continued freedom of other groups.
“If you don’t like Mr. Peter Obi, please keep quiet and mind your own business,” Bishop Ibeabuchi advised.
He further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by Professor Joash Amupitan, to deliver credible elections in 2027, warning against political interference.
Expressing concern over reports of potential manipulation using artificial intelligence, he called on INEC to adopt safeguards that ensure transparency and independence.
