Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that he and members of the defunct G-5 governors deliberately prevented Labour Party candidate Peter Obi from winning Rivers State in the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking in an interview on TVC News, Wike said the decision was part of a broader strategy to weaken the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the South-South region.
“We in the G-5 had our strategy. The PDP was stronger in the South-South and our problem was Atiku. So instead of Atiku taking it, we allowed the Labour Party to win in some places. But in Rivers, we said no. Obi will not win here. If he wins, it will send a signal somewhere. We stopped it,” Wike stated.
He added that the political dynamics have since changed, insisting that Obi cannot secure victory in the South-South in future contests.
The remarks come amid lingering controversy over the 2023 election results in Rivers State, with Obi claiming he won the state and critics alleging manipulation to favour the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
