The recent visit of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), to Makurdi has stirred controversy after reports suggested he was conveyed in a vehicle allegedly registered to former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom.
Governor Hyacinth Alia’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, raised the issue during a press briefing at the Benue State Government House, noting that preliminary checks linked the Toyota Land Cruiser used by Obi to Ortom, with registration number ABUJA: GWA 608 BT.
Kula said records from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the vehicle’s registration details, including Ortom’s name and address in Judges Quarters, Makurdi.
“The question is, how can someone who publicly says he is working for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu make his vehicle available for the use of another presidential candidate?” Kula asked.
He argued that the development raises doubts about Ortom’s political stance, given his recent public support for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, while also maintaining influence within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue.
Kula further accused Ortom of maladministration during his eight years in office and suggested that the former governor is attempting to retain political relevance through allies and proxies.
The incident has reignited debate over Ortom’s political alliances as the 2027 elections draw closer. Neither Ortom nor his representatives have yet responded to the allegations.
