Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have reportedly foiled an attempt by suspected armed herders and their cattle to invade farmlands around the Manja community in Mangu LGA of Plateau state.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency
publication, the incident occurred at about 5:25 pm on Thursday, when troops
responded to reports of armed herders moving through the community’s forested
area.
Makama said the troops’ swift intervention forced the
suspected assailants to move further into the forest.
The publication said a subsequent search of the area
revealed that the suspected herders had uprooted and looted farm produce,
including yam and potatoes that were due for harvesting.
Makama said security forces, in collaboration with Fulani
leaders in the area, have commenced efforts to identify the suspects and
establish their whereabouts.
The publication said troops also intervened in a clash
between farmers and herders in Mabushi village, Kurmin Dawaki district, Kauru
LGA of Kaduna state, on the same day.
Makama said the incident occurred at about 6:20 pm,
following a report of a confrontation between the two groups over the alleged
destruction of farmlands.
The counter-insurgency publication said the troops’
intervention brought the situation under control, preventing further
escalation.
“Four victims, however, sustained injuries during the clash
and were evacuated to the primary health centre in Manchok for medical
attention,” Makama said.
Makama said troops recovered abandoned cattle reportedly
belonging to one Ardo Ambo of Jankasa village in Kaura LGA during the incident.
Makama said the cattle were moved to a safe location pending
efforts to resolve the dispute, adding that security forces detained two people
for questioning as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the clash
are ongoing.
