A United States-based policy advisory firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, has stated that America’s anti-terror collaboration with Nigeria is not an open-ended commitment.
In a post on its verified X account on Tuesday, the firm commended President Donald Trump’s administration for approving the sale of weapons to Nigeria to strengthen its fight against terrorism.
“This is a good development and points to the Trump administration’s strong desire to counter terrorism in Nigeria,” the firm noted.
It stressed, however, that while shared interests in combating terrorism align U.S. and Nigerian priorities, Washington’s support does not extend to all aspects of Nigeria’s leadership.
The firm reiterated its stance that the U.S. would “not now, not ever” condone alleged past involvement of President Bola Tinubu in heroin trafficking during the 1980s and 1990s.
“Unlike previous administrations, the United States is selling Nigeria the weapons it needs to take the fight to the terrorists who threaten both U.S. and Nigerian interests. Nevertheless, shared interests do not mean blanket support,” the statement added.
The advisory group emphasized that U.S. partnerships remain conditional, citing Venezuela as an example of how aligned interests can shift when values diverge.
