Several prominent leaders of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State have left the party and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Among those who defected are Mogaji Saheed Oyewale, the SDP’s candidate for Oluyole State Constituency in the 2023 general elections, and David Arowolo, the party’s chairmanship candidate in the 2024 local government election.
Also joining the APC are Ganiyu Lawal, the SDP Chairman in Oluyole Local Government Area; Adetunji Adewale, the Secretary; Taiwo Lasisi, the Women Leader; Muritala Jeje, the Youth Leader; and Afeez Agbongbon, the Public Relations Officer.
The entire local government and ward executive committees from all 10 electoral wards in the area also moved with them.
The group announced the decision during a visit to the APC state secretariat in Ibadan on Tuesday, where they were received by the party’s state Chairman, Chief Moses Adeyemo.
Oyewale, who spoke on behalf of the defectors, said the move was driven by a desire to support President Bola Tinubu’s vision for a better Nigeria.
“We decided to join the APC because we appreciate the good work of President Tinubu and, as patriots, we cannot afford to stay away when we can be part of the success story,” he said.
He added that most key figures in the SDP are expected to follow suit within weeks and pledged that the new members would work hard to secure a strong victory for the APC in the 2027 elections.
