Reno Omokri: N3,000 Enough for Daily Survival in Nigeria

Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has argued that an average Nigerian can survive on ₦3,000 per day, stressing that poverty must be assessed within the economic realities of each country.

Speaking on Sunday Politics, Omokri explained that he personally visited a local market with a journalist to check food prices.

“From what I saw, ₦3,000 is enough for an average Nigerian to live on for a day,” he said, noting that staples like yam, rice, maize, and fruits could be purchased within that amount.

He contrasted Nigeria’s situation with the United States, where the same sum would be insufficient to meet basic needs.

“In the United States, if you try to live on that amount in a day, it is poverty. So, you have to context, again, context matters,” he added.

Omokri also addressed the World Bank’s global poverty benchmark, which defines poverty as living on less than $2 a day.

He argued that such international standards should not be applied without considering the unique cost of living in individual countries.

While acknowledging the World Bank’s use of a global measure, he insisted that Nigeria’s economic conditions require a more localized approach to defining poverty.
