First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has presented ₦20 million to Maryam Ibrahim Dan’Azumi, the Nigerian who recently won the King Abdulaziz International Qur’anic Competition in Saudi Arabia.
The presentation took place on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja when Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya led a delegation to introduce Maryam to the First Lady.
Yahaya, who shared details of the meeting on Facebook, expressed appreciation to Tinubu for the warm reception and the ₦20 million support towards Maryam’s education.
Maryam, a student of Abubakar Siddiq Community School for Qur’anic Memorisation in Gombe, emerged overall winner of the second category at the 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur’an Recitation Competition held in Makkah.
She competed in the category covering full memorisation of the Holy Qur’an, recitation, Tajweed and interpretation, scoring 97.70 marks.
Her victory was historic as it came in the first year the 46-year-old competition admitted female contestants. She also received a reported prize of about ₦120 million from the Saudi organisers.
A statement from the Gombe State Government quoted the First Lady as describing Maryam as a source of pride to Nigerian women and the girl-child.
“Maryam has brought joy to us. You have made us proud by conquering the world, especially in this area of faith and divine knowledge,” Tinubu said.
Maryam, a final-year Physics Education student at Gombe State University, had earlier won the female category at the 40th National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Her elder sister, Hajara, also previously won a similar international competition in Jordan in 2024.
