The Anambra State Government has disputed former Governor Peter Obi’s assertion that he left more than ₦2.13 billion in an ecological fund account when he handed over power in 2014.
Commissioner for Information Law Mefor said the First Bank account Obi cited, number 2018779464, was never an ecological fund account. Instead, it is an Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) Consolidated Revenue Account.
Mefor stated that the government obtained a certified statement of the account covering its entire history from 2011 to the present.
“From 2011 when the account was opened until date, there has never been any such amount, whether as inflow or balance in the account,” he said.
He challenged Obi to clarify where the ₦2.13 billion he claimed to have left for his successor was actually kept.
Obi’s claim followed earlier statements by the state government that his administration left behind certain financial liabilities, including a ₦2 billion ecological-related debt.
Obi rejected those allegations, saying the funds were a federal allocation for the Oko/Umuchiana erosion control project released shortly before he left office.
He maintained that he deliberately left the money untouched in the First Bank account, with a balance exceeding ₦2.13 billion, and that it was separate from the over ₦75 billion in savings he said his government also handed over.
The state government insists the certified bank records do not support Obi’s description of either the nature of the account or the balance he cited.
