Professor Pat Utomi, a leading voice in the Movement for Credible Elections, has cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against restricting Nigerians from using technology at polling units during the 2027 presidential election.
In an interview with Arise News, Utomi argued that preventing citizens from bringing devices to stream live updates would amount to criminal conduct by INEC.
He stressed that transparency tools such as body cameras and live streaming from polling booths are essential to safeguard the integrity of the vote.
“If INEC tells us that people can’t bring things to make elections transparent, then they are criminals who want the elections not to be transparent. The election should be technologised; body cams, live streaming from every polling booth in the country. If they don’t want it, let Nigerians take over their country,” Utomi said.
He compared Nigeria’s electoral process to practices in the United Kingdom and United States, where results are monitored and reported by the media rather than being tightly controlled by electoral bodies.
Utomi also criticized politicians who misuse public funds for campaigns, calling it “thievery” and vowing to push for international accountability.
Utomi emphasized that if Nigerians believe their votes truly count, no force could suppress the people’s will.
His remarks come as President Bola Tinubu of the APC, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, and former Anambra governor Peter Obi of the NDC prepare to contest the 2027 presidential election.
