The Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom has announced a £50 refund for Nigerians who paid a £70 administrative fee during the ongoing passport intervention exercise.
Applicants will now retain only £20, which is the standard administrative charge.The announcement, published on the Commission’s website on Friday, follows widespread complaints about extra charges and technical difficulties experienced during the special exercise.
“This is to inform all passport intervention applicants that have paid £70 admin fee that £50 will be refunded to you, £20 being the standard admin fee,” the notice read.
The Federal Government had earlier denied introducing additional charges, clarifying that applicants were required to pay only the official passport fees plus bank charges.
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) also confirmed that no extra payments were mandated.
The intervention exercise, initially scheduled to end on September 19, has been extended in London and Manchester until October 3 due to high turnout.
According to the NIS, 1,477 Nigerians were processed within the first four days, with more than half of the passports already produced and dispatched.
However, technical glitches at the Manchester centre have caused delays, leaving some applicants frustrated over uncertainty surrounding fees and procedures.
The refund move is expected to ease tensions and restore confidence in the intervention programme, which was designed to fast-track passport issuance for Nigerians in the UK.
