Many Northern Governors Can't Campaign Due to Poor Performance - Kwankwaso

Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has cautioned that controlling over 30 governors will not guarantee electoral victory in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at an NDC Town Hall Meeting in Rivers State, the former Kano State Governor argued that many governors, particularly in Northern Nigeria, have performed so poorly that they may struggle to campaign for their parties.

Kwankwaso recalled past elections where incumbents lost despite commanding influence across several states.

He warned political actors against assuming that numerical control of governors translates to electoral success.

“Those who think because they have over 30 governors they cannot lose the election are making a very big mistake,” he said.

He accused governors of mismanaging public funds, noting that despite record revenues in recent years, little impact has been felt by ordinary Nigerians.

Kwankwaso contrasted current allocations with his time as governor in 1999, when states and local governments received about N4bn each, compared to trillions today.

The NDC candidate added that widespread dissatisfaction and insecurity, especially in the North, have fueled public anger.

He predicted that this discontent would make it difficult for many governors to campaign effectively in 2027.
