Malami Calls for Fuel Subsidy Restoration to Ease Hardship in Northwest

Abubakar Malami, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Kebbi State, has backed the return of fuel subsidy, arguing that it is necessary to cushion the worsening economic hardship in Nigeria’s Northwest region.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday during the signing of the Northwest ADC Governorship Candidates’ Compact 2027–2031, Malami said the removal of subsidy had intensified pressure on households and driven up the cost of living.

“We, the ADC Governorship Candidates of the seven Northwest States, hereby declare our total support for the promise made by the ADC Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to restore the subsidy as one of the immediate steps to halt the further slide of our people into abject poverty,” Malami stated.

The ADC candidates from the Northwest jointly urged President Bola Tinubu to reverse the policy, insisting that the expected benefits of subsidy removal had not translated into improved living conditions for ordinary Nigerians.

They linked the economic strain to rising hunger and other challenges confronting residents across the region, stressing that restoring subsidy would provide immediate relief while longer-term reforms are pursued.
