The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s declaration that the 2027 presidential election will be his final attempt at the presidency, describing it as a “desperate last attempt” to occupy Nigeria’s highest office.
In a statement issued Saturday, APC Publicity Secretary Seye Oladejo argued that Atiku’s ambition reflects personal interest rather than a clear vision for the country.
He questioned Atiku’s choice of Kenneth Okonkwo, a former Labour Party campaign spokesperson, as his campaign spokesman, and criticized reported engagements with US lobbying firms aimed at boosting Atiku’s image.
Oladejo also pointed to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s past criticisms of Atiku, insisting that his record as Vice-President between 1999 and 2007 should be part of voters’ assessment.
The APC spokesman further attacked Atiku’s reported plan to restore petrol subsidy, calling it a reversal of his 2023 campaign stance.
He challenged Atiku to explain how the subsidy would be funded and safeguarded against corruption.
Oladejo criticized Atiku’s move from the PDP to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he is expected to run on a joint ticket with former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, saying party-switching does not equate to offering fresh governance solutions.
“Switching party labels does not equate to offering fresh economic or governance solutions. The presidency of Nigeria is not a consolation prize for political longevity or a lifetime achievement award,” Oladejo said.
The Lagos APC urged Nigerians to scrutinize opposition candidates’ policies and demand concrete proposals rather than populist rhetoric, stressing that voters must weigh Atiku’s record and policy ideas carefully as the 2027 elections approach.
