INEC Schedules By-Elections for September 19 in Four States

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set Saturday, September 19, 2026, as the date for by-elections in four states: Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, and Delta.

In a post on its official X account on Friday, the commission announced that the polls will cover the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State; Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State; Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State; and Udu State Constituency in Delta State.

Voting will take place at polling units in the affected areas from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.The five seats fell vacant for various reasons.

In Gombe, the federal constituency seat opened after the death of lawmaker Yaya Bauchi Tongo in June 2026. In Bauchi, the Sakwa seat became vacant following the death of its previous holder, while the Disina representative resigned to run for a local government chairmanship.

In Delta, the State House of Assembly declared the Udu seat vacant after Collins Egbetamah defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

The Dawakin Kudu seat in Kano opened when Rabiu Shuaibu left the state assembly to contest (and win) the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency by-election in June.INEC will hold the September 19 elections to fill these legislative vacancies across the four states.
