Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed speculation that he is acting as Nigeria’s president during the absence of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima from Aso Rock.
Speaking in Akwa Ibom State on Tuesday, Akpabio emphasized that Tinubu remains in charge despite being on a three-week working vacation in France, while Shettima is attending the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
“I am the Senate President and not the acting President of Nigeria because President Tinubu is still in power. He’s on a working leave, and there’s no absence in Aso Rock,” Akpabio said.
He further explained that only he, as Senate President, could declare a vacancy in the presidency, but insisted there is none. Akpabio added that modern technology allows leaders to govern remotely:
“The world is a global village; you can give instructions from the internet. So why are people complaining?”
His remarks come amid public debate over constitutional provisions for presidential absence and questions raised by opposition parties about governance continuity.
