I wouldn’t have married Simi if she had SS genotype, says Adekunle Gold

Adekunle Gold, the Nigerian singer, has revealed that he would not have married fellow celebrity Simi if she had the SS blood genotype.

The SS genotype causes sickle cell disease, a genetic blood condition in which red blood cells form a stiff, crescent or sickle shape instead of their normal round shape, leading to various health complications.

In an interview on the One 54 podcast, the ‘Many People’ hitmaker said he and Simi took a genotype test when they first met to determine whether they were compatible, adding that she is AA.

Gold stressed the need for greater awareness about genotype compatibility, saying people must understand the importance of knowing their genotype before starting a relationship or having children.

“There is so much awareness to be done. People need to understand that if you have sickle cell, forget about love, you can’t be with someone with sickle cell too. It makes no sense to bring a child into the world who will be sickly,” he said.

“There’s no way I would have married my wife Simi if she was sickle cell. The first thing we did when we met was a genotype test to know if we matched. If we didn’t, I wouldn’t have married her. She is AA.”

The singer, who disclosed his sickle cell journey in 2022 and raised awareness about the condition in his single ‘5 Star,’ has been a vocal advocate for sickle cell awareness.

In July 2024, Gold emphasised his commitment to the cause, stating that his mission was to help others living with the condition “feel safe and supported”.

In 2025, the singer introduced a free health insurance programme to support 1,000 people living with sickle cell disease.
