Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed has said his recent comments about 2027 presidential contenders were taken out of context.
Baba-Ahmed made the clarification on Friday during an appearance on Trust TV.
He had earlier been reported as saying that none of the major candidates running for president in 2027, including his former principal Peter Obi, could improve Nigeria.
Responding to the backlash, Baba-Ahmed explained that he had told the interviewer the focus he wanted for the discussion, but the questions kept shifting away from his main point.
“Channels Television’s Seun asked me what advice I would give to President Tinubu. I responded that Tinubu should prepare to hand over power for the sake of fairness, so as not to unduly advantage Atiku Abubakar,” he said.
“While I was rushing, Seun added ‘including Peter Obi’ to the question. Because of time and stress, I responded, ‘yes.’ And that is what Nigerians took.
“This was the context behind the remark that was reported as Peter Obi can’t improve Nigeria.”
