Five men have been arrested and charged in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, for allegedly printing and wearing T-shirts inscribed with the words “Tinubu Must Go.”
The suspects were identified as Baba Aji Gremami, 44; Mustapha Abba Yemen, 28; Abbacha Mohammed Ali, 32; Adam Umar Gubio, 21; and Abdulhamid Mohammed, 21.
According to a First Information Report issued by the State Criminal Investigation Department and dated 29 September 2026, the incident occurred on 25 September around 11 a.m. near the West End Roundabout community.
Police alleged the men conspired to produce and wear the T-shirts with the intent to cause a breach of public peace.
They face charges of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, disturbance of public peace, and thuggery under Sections 60, 78, 79 and 392 of the Borno State Penal Code.
The five were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court I in Maiduguri, where they pleaded not guilty.
Their lawyer applied for bail. The court adjourned the matter to 6 October for a ruling on the bail application, with the substantive trial scheduled for 26 October.
Amnesty International condemned the arrests, describing them as arbitrary. The rights group said wearing a T-shirt expressing political dissent is not a crime and forms part of the right to freedom of expression.
It called for the men’s unconditional release and urged authorities to drop any plans for what it termed a sham trial on bogus charges.
Amnesty further accused the Borno State Government and police of increasingly targeting opposition supporters with repressive arrests, warning against the criminalisation of peaceful dissent.
The Borno State chapter of the African Democratic Congress also criticised the arrests as an infringement on freedom of expression and demanded the immediate release of the youths.
The party urged security agencies to act professionally and in accordance with the law.
