The Federal Government has outlined plans for a high-speed rail corridor connecting Lagos to Maiduguri as part of efforts to build a more integrated and efficient national transport network.
Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Olufunso Adebiyi, made the disclosure on Monday at the opening of the 19th National Council on Transportation in Abuja.
Adebiyi said the proposed Lagos-Maiduguri line could support trains running at speeds of up to 360 kilometres per hour.
This would significantly cut travel times between major cities and offer Nigerians a faster alternative to road transport.
Speaking under the theme “Developing an Effective Transport System for Nigeria: The Role of Integrated Transportation,” he described transport as a key driver of economic growth, essential for the movement of people, goods and services.
He characterised the ongoing expansion and rehabilitation of the railway network as a “rebirth” of rail transport in the country.
Completed and operational corridors include Port Harcourt-Aba, Warri-Itakpe, Lagos-Ibadan and Abuja-Kaduna.
Construction of the Kaduna-Zaria-Kano line is nearing completion and is expected to begin operations by December.
Work continues on the Kaduna-Daura-Katsina, Katsina-Jibia-Maradi and Kano-Dutse corridors.Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Abel Enitan stressed that infrastructure alone is not enough.
He called for strong institutions, effective regulation, reliable data, innovation and a skilled workforce to support the investments.
Enitan described transportation as the lifeblood of the economy and urged closer collaboration between the Federal Government, state governments and transport agencies to create a truly integrated national system.
