FG Pays ₦18bn Severance Benefits to 2,700 Ex-Nigeria Airways Workers

The Federal Government has disbursed ₦18 billion in outstanding severance benefits to 2,700 former employees of the defunct Nigeria Airways, nearly two decades after the airline was liquidated.

Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele confirmed the payments during a press briefing on Friday, noting that the directive came from President Bola Tinubu.

He explained that the disbursement is being made in batches and all verified beneficiaries will receive their payments within days.

“Today is about much more than the payment of money. It’s about people, dignity, trust, and the responsibility of government to honour legitimate obligations to its citizens,” Oyedele said.

He emphasized that each verified arrear represents not just a retiree but also families and businesses affected by the long delay.

Nigeria Airways was officially liquidated in 2004, leaving thousands of workers without their entitlements.

The latest payment marks a significant step in addressing the long-standing grievances of former staff.
