The Federal Government has unveiled a six-month Digital Training Academy (DTA) to equip 32,000 Nigerians with globally relevant digital skills, professional certifications, and pathways to employment and entrepreneurship in the fast-growing digital economy.
Announcing the initiative in Abuja, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, revealed that the programme is part of the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, under the Nigeria Education Digital Infrastructure programme, and aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to the ministry, over 72,000 applications were received nationwide, with 19,699 meeting entry requirements. From this pool, 16,000 participants were selected for the inaugural cohort.
Beneficiaries will gain access to international learning platforms such as Coursera and Pluralsight, and pursue certifications from leading organisations including Google, IBM, and Huawei.
Training will focus on high-demand areas such as:
Software development
Cybersecurity
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Cloud computingIT automation
Natural Language Processing
Quantum computing
The government pledged to provide infrastructure and human resources, including computers, internet connectivity, facilitators, and mentors, to support the academy.
The programme will be implemented in partnership with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and Yaba College of Technology, with the ministry emphasizing that it will track certification, employment, and enterprise outcomes to ensure a measurable link between skills acquisition and economic opportunities.
This launch comes at a time when demand for digital expertise is surging globally, and Nigeria is positioning itself to bridge its digital skills gap, boost youth employability, and strengthen entrepreneurship in the technology-driven economy.
