Fayemi: Atiku’s Fuel Subsidy Plan Mirrors APC’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket

Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has likened Atiku Abubakar’s pledge to restore Nigeria’s fuel subsidy to the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Muslim-Muslim ticket strategy in the 2023 elections.

Speaking on Arise News, Fayemi argued that Atiku’s proposal is more of a political maneuver than an economic solution.

He noted that the plan is designed to appeal to Nigerians struggling with the hardship caused by President Bola Tinubu’s removal of the subsidy in May 2023.

Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has vowed to reinstate the subsidy if elected in 2027.

Fayemi, however, maintained that while he supports subsidy removal, the government should have implemented stronger safety nets to protect vulnerable citizens.

“Atiku’s proposal on subsidy is the political equivalent of our APC Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2023. It’s not an economic construct, but a political strategy that will resonate with those hard hit by subsidy removal,” Fayemi said.

He added that the Nigerian Governors Forum had previously worked with the federal government and the World Bank to design measures aimed at cushioning the impact of subsidy removal, but lamented that such safeguards were not fully implemented.

Fayemi concluded that Atiku’s stance is a calculated move to maximize electoral support, just as the APC’s ticket was in 2023.
