Human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has argued that Nigeria’s judiciary was more credible during military regimes than it is today.
In a statement shared on social media on Sunday, Farotimi lamented that the judiciary has lost the integrity it once commanded, describing the current system as “complicit” and operating on what he termed a corrupt mandate.
He recalled that under military rule, successive governments often ignored court orders and relied on ouster clauses to shield their actions from judicial review.
Despite those challenges, Farotimi maintained that the judiciary of that era remained “worthy of the name,” with judges retaining a level of institutional respect that he believes is absent today.
“When our judiciary was worthy of the name, in the heyday of the military bandits that ruled Nigeria, the rulers routinely ignored court orders and ruled with ouster clauses,” he said.
Farotimi, a consistent advocate for judicial and institutional reform, has repeatedly raised concerns about the weakening of democratic institutions, accountability, and the rule of law in Nigeria.
