Hon. Umar Lawan Sheriff, Chairman of Guzamala Local Government Area in Borno State, has been accused of firing a double-barrelled gun and threatening to kill a man during a confrontation at the residence of a former state governor.
According to reports by Zagazola Makama, the incident began with an argument between Sheriff and Sanusi Othman, who was staying at the residence.
Sheriff allegedly made remarks suggesting Othman might be involved with drugs, prompting Othman to send him a WhatsApp message warning against linking his name to such claims.
Eyewitnesses said Sheriff later returned to the house, pulled out a firearm, and fired into the air, causing panic among those present. He was also alleged to have pointed the weapon at Othman, who managed to escape.
A video circulating on social media showed a spent shotgun cartridge said to have been recovered from the scene.
Sources revealed that efforts were made to settle the matter privately rather than involving security agencies, with associates of the chairman reportedly appealing to the victim not to escalate the issue.
They argued that public exposure could have serious consequences for Sheriff, including the loss of his position.
The allegations, involving the use of a firearm and threats to life, have raised concerns, though authorities are yet to formally investigate or confirm the circumstances surrounding the incident.
