Former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, has criticized the use of public funds for religious activities, insisting that government has no business sponsoring marriages or pilgrimages.
Speaking on the KAA Truths podcast, Melaye faulted both state and federal governments for allocating billions of naira to religious programs instead of investing in critical infrastructure such as roads and hospitals.
According to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, religion is a personal matter that should not involve state funding.
He argued: “Government has no business sponsoring religious activities including marriages. What is the function of the churches? What is the function of the billionaires who can sponsor people on pilgrimage? There is no chapter in the Quran or Bible that says if you don’t go to Mecca or Israel, you won’t make heaven.”
Melaye lamented that Nigeria continues to spend hundreds of billions annually on pilgrimages to Mecca and Jerusalem while essential services remain underfunded.
He stressed that prioritizing religion over development is a misplacement of national resources.
