A high court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja has adjourned the N1 billion defamation suit filed by actress Judy Austin against her former husband, Emmanuel Obasi, to November 24.
The case came before the court on Tuesday, where Obasi’s
legal team challenged the court’s jurisdiction to hear the suit.
The matter was subsequently adjourned for further
proceedings.
Obasi announced the development in a post on his Facebook
page, saying the proceedings “went well”.
“A QUICK UPDATE ON THE CASE”, he wrote.
“My lawyers have informed me that the lawyers representing
the other party have been served with my application challenging the
jurisdiction of the court. I have shared the front page of the application.
“My lawyers are also preparing the other documents that will
be filed in the case and have assured me that we are still well within the time
allowed to file them.
“Today’s proceedings went well. The case has now been
adjourned to 24 November 2026.
“For now, I will continue to follow the advice of my lawyers
and allow the legal process to take Its course.”
Austin instituted the suit in August, seeking N1 billion in
general damages from Obasi over alleged defamatory statements he made about
her.
She is also seeking N500 million in aggravated damages, N500
million in exemplary damages and N100 million as the cost of prosecuting the
case.
The actress is asking the court to compel Obasi to publish a
full retraction and apology in at least two national newspapers and across his
social media platforms.
She is also seeking an order restraining him from further
publishing what she considers defamatory statements about her and directing him
to remove previous posts containing the alleged defamatory material.
Shortly after being served the court papers, Obasi told
TheCable Lifestyle that he was not bothered by the lawsuit and saw it as an
opportunity to reunite with his children, whom he said he had not seen for more
than 12 years.
The legal action stems from a long-running public feud.
Obasi claimed in 2024 that Austin had denied him access to their children for a
decade following her marriage to actor Yul Edochie in 2023.
