Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), has declared that anyone caught rigging elections under his potential administration would face imprisonment, even for manipulating a single vote.
Speaking in an interview with Arise News on Thursday, September 24, 2026, Obi outlined his stance on electoral integrity and democratic governance as the country prepares for the 2027 presidential election.
“I’ve said it, and I’ll say it again: if I am the serving president of this country, whoever rigs elections will be in jail. Even for one vote, you will be in jail,” he stated.
Obi also promised that opposition parties would not face harassment under his leadership.
He said his government would actively involve them in key national decisions, including during foreign trips, stressing that nation-building requires broad participation.He pledged to remain physically present and accessible in Nigeria, rejecting prolonged absences from the country.
The NDC candidate criticised restrictions on his campaign activities in some states and called for free campaigning for all candidates, regardless of affiliation.
Drawing from his time as Anambra State governor, he recalled allowing opponents such as then-Lagos Governor Babatunde Fashola, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and former Abia Governor Orji Uzor Kalu to campaign freely, even providing support like vehicles and logistics.
On claims that he left Anambra with significant debt, Obi rejected the assertions. He insisted he did not borrow or issue bonds during his eight years in office, noted the state had no outstanding salaries or verified contractor payments when he left, and said any foreign debt increases related to federal on-lending facilities.
He pointed to savings and investments left behind that he argued would cover disputed obligations, and urged verification of his handover documents.
Obi said he has no personal dispute with current Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo, describing their relationship as one of mutual respect.
He also questioned prolonged absences by President Bola Tinubu, arguing a leader’s presence is essential during national challenges.
Regarding a reported campaign council linked to the Obedient Kwankwasiyya Movement, Obi said it lacked his approval and should function only as a support group.
He expressed openness to opposition cooperation, including potential discussions on candidates stepping aside if it serves the national interest, while stressing he is focused on making Nigeria work rather than personal ambition.
Obi called on all parties to prioritise free, fair, credible, and violence-free elections, campaigning on issues that affect ordinary Nigerians.
The remarks come as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 polls, with Obi previously affirming he has never engaged in electoral malpractice.
