Senate President Godswill Akpabio has formally petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS) over a statement circulating on Facebook and other social media platforms, which he described as false, inflammatory, and divisive.
Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, confirmed the petition, which was filed by the Senate President’s Chief of Staff, Chinedu Akubueze.
The petition urged the DSS to investigate the origin of the statement, which was shared alongside Akpabio’s photograph and official designation.
The statement falsely quoted Akpabio as saying: “Northerners, you will be the ones to suffer the most, if you allow Tinubu to lose the election.”Akubueze stressed that no credible evidence, such as a date, venue, video, audio, or official record exists to support the claim.
He argued that the graphic appeared deliberately fabricated to mislead the public and incite anger against Akpabio, particularly among Northern Nigerians.
The petition identified several Facebook users who allegedly played early roles in circulating the graphic, including Abdullai Musa, Uzoma Chilaka, and Ibrahim Umar Ammar.
However, Akpabio’s office emphasized that these individuals should not be presumed guilty until investigations are concluded, though their involvement makes them “material persons of interest.”
The petition called for a thorough probe into the publication records, devices, and communications of those linked to the spread of the statement, in order to trace its designer, original uploader, and possible sponsors.
This development comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with social media increasingly used as a tool for both campaigning and misinformation.
