Social Democratic Party presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has pledged to install between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power on every Nigerian rooftop within 11 months of taking office if elected in 2027.
Adebayo made the commitment during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday. He said his administration would set up solar-panel manufacturing plants across the country and train citizens in installation and maintenance.
“I promise that between 11 to 15 kilowatts of solar power will be put on every roof within 11 months,” he stated.The SDP candidate noted that he had previously advised government on power matters and conducted a pilot project in his hometown, where he claimed to have trained about 2,000 people. He said he manufactures solar panels and lithium batteries himself but currently imports inverters.
Adebayo proposed forming partnerships with countries such as China, Turkey and India to establish the factories, while Nigerians would be trained to run them. He argued that these solar clusters would supply electricity for basic household needs, generate employment, and produce up to 32,000 megawatts in total. The national grid, he added, would serve mainly as a backup in case any cluster fails.
Beyond solar, Adebayo said government should make strategic investments in key sectors such as aviation and manufacturing through operating and maintenance contracts rather than leaving them entirely to private operators. On energy security, he prioritised domestic refining and tackling crude oil theft, claiming as much as 900,000 barrels are still being stolen daily. Recovering that volume, he said, would boost supply without extra government spending.
He maintained that public investment in electricity and education would simultaneously create jobs by employing workers who would then earn incomes.
