The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has received more than 1,000 defection letters from members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta North Senatorial District, signaling a major political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made on Monday in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, during a formal reception led by Chief Alex Ikpeazu, former Convener of the Delta Coalition for Equity.
Ikpeazu explained that the mass defection reflected growing dissatisfaction among APC members over what he described as years of marginalisation and neglect of Delta North.
“We have received over 1,000 defection letters from people who want to join the NDC,” Ikpeazu said.
The defectors, including former party leaders and political stakeholders, pledged to mobilise support for the NDC’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and its Delta State governorship candidate, Yovwaye Chris.
Welcoming the new members, NDC State Chairman Dr. Oyidobo Richmond described the move as a major boost to the party’s strength in Delta.
He urged them to return to their wards and begin grassroots mobilisation, assuring equal treatment for all members regardless of when they joined.
Richmond highlighted Obi’s “clean political profile” as a factor attracting Nigerians to the NDC, while Chris framed the defection as part of a broader political movement rather than mere party-switching.
NDC senatorial chairman Harron Udaka also hailed the development as a significant milestone for the party in Delta North.
Ikpeazu criticized APC leaders who had previously defected from the PDP, accusing them of failing to address the concerns of Delta North.
He insisted that the move to the NDC was driven by the need for equity and better representation.
